Abby has been an academic at Ohio State for ten years: four for her undergraduate degree in Biological Engineering and six (so far) for her PhD in Ecological Engineering.  In these various positions she has gained knowledge and experience about how to learn and how to teach. Abby has been teaching students ages 3-63 at her church(es) since 2009 and at Ohio State for 3 years. In all of those settings and with all ages, her core teaching philosophy is to take her students seriously: to listen before talking, put herself in their shoes, and see things from their perspective. Things go more smoothly if she understands their needs and doesn't just impose her teaching plan. Tutoring is an especially great setting for this because of the one on one nature of the interaction. Abby's favorite part of teaching is getting good questions from her students - this is such a great indication that they're learning and thinking deeply about the material. And it helps her learn from them!
